"Make Life Easier: Ask a Librarian"

Another great article on how librarians can help you throughout college!

"College librarians are more than the shush-ers of old -- they're great, often tech-savvy and helpful resources."

Manderino Library Gallery Schedule

May 6, 2010 - August 24, 2010: "Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente"

Clemente Exhibit Logo
Roberto Clemente became a baseball legend during the 1960s and 70s with his explosive throwing arm, lightning speed, and consistently high batting average, but he was much more than an astounding athlete. For millions of fans across the world, especially in his native Puerto Rico and throughout Latin America, Clemente was a cultural hero who gave underprivileged people a voice. His story—a study in character, drive, and the ascendancy of man to myth—is told in Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente.

California University is pleased to be able to bring Smithsonian Institution exhibits to our campus as a result of our relationship with the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). For more information, visit SITES: Cal U.

The Manderino Library Gallery is open these hours.

What's greener: e-readers or books?

Interesting op-ed comparing the lives of ereaders and physical books, from the materials used to make and manufacture, transport, read and dispose of each item. The author calculates where the environmental break even point is - and of course mentions the most eco-friendly option: your library!

Keith Richard's secret wish....to be a librarian!

Of course we all know that a librarian's job is way more than keeping track of books - personally, I have a lot more focus on working students through the research process and helping them find and evaluate quality resources both through print and online materials...but we're all happy the Stones' guitarist has a passion for books, and wish him well in his efforts to organize his collection.

Why and what to read from NPR

Two stories from National Public Radio reaffirmed my love of books: the first story talked about how intensive reading in childhood can actually change the physical nature of the brain. Children with low reading levels were put into a intensive reading program, and after the program, parts of their brains had changed. According to the story "training changed 'not just their reading ability, but the tissues in their brain,' ...the integrity of their white matter improved." Listen to the whole story at NPR:

Reading Practice Can Strengthen Brain Highways
